When Eminem released his surprise album Kamikaze back in August, he didn’t bother with a press tour or the old-school media song and dance. Instead, he dropped a link to buy the album on Twitter, told fans he “Tried not 2 overthink this 1” and added a middle finger emoji. Because just as he’s done many times before, Eminem decided to let the music speak for itself. And to no one’s surprise, the rapper’s tenth studio album was chock-full of controversial lyrics —including anti-gay slurs which he later regretted and targeted attacks on fellow rappers and politicians.
Kamikaze had all the headline-making, think piece-generating themes we’ve come to expect from an Eminem album. And it was an instant commercial success, too, selling , album-equivalent units in its first week to secure the No. But when it came to the court of public opinion, Kamikaze —much like the rest of Eminem’s life and career—received very mixed reviews. And it’s been like this for the rapper, who’s celebrating his 46th birthday today, ever since most of us were introduced to his Slim Shady alter ego nearly 20 years ago.
The Detroit-based MC stood out from the get-go—and not just because he was a white rapper in a predominantly black industry. He had a rhyming style and delivery unlike anything we’d heard before. There was also the fact that his breakout single, “My Name Is,” had explicit references to graphic sexual acts, violence against women and drug use.
Even in its censored state, the song was controversial—and it came right at the time when mainstream music was dominated by wholesome boy bands and Britney Spears But there was no ignoring Eminem. Hip hop was something you had to experience live, in clubs and at parties in neighborhoods like the South Bronx and Harlem. Those were the settings in which founding fathers of hip hop like Grandmaster Flash, Kurtis Blow and DJ Kool Herc were busy making their names while the crowds at Studio 54 danced away the last days of the disco just a few miles to the south.
Meanwhile, it was a businesswoman from New Jersey who put the two trends together to give birth to an industry.
Presented by rap heavyweights Krept and Konan, alongside DJ Target — the man responsible for spotting new talent for BBC Radio 1Xtra — the show puts the aspiring rappers through their paces over six intense weeks. The first British MCs emerged during the boom of soundsystem culture. In the mid-eighties, rap outfit London Posse were one of the first acts to pioneer the idea of rapping in English, rather than US, accents — mixing London slang with Jamaican patois.
They paved the way for a distinct British sound to develop. He began releasing tracks through his own label, laying the groundwork for a distinct urban British sound — his single Witness has earned anthem status as a classic of the genre. MC Mike Skinner, better known as The Streets, brought fresh attention to Birmingham and its emerging scene, with lyrics that celebrated both the humour and mundanity of British life.
Over in north London, duo Artful Dodger and female MCs like Ms Dynamite would keep the pace by bringing UK garage — which fused dance music with heavy bass sounds — to the masses. Later, Akala began blazing a trail for politically-motivated rap, with powerful lyrics challenging the status quo. Grime was also blasting out from east London at the start of the millennium from pirate radio stations and basement venues across the capital.
Pioneered by the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Kano, and Lethal Bizzle, it saw MCs spitting razor sharp bars over beats at a tempo of beats-per-minute bpm.
