With a bit of courage the issue might be addressed and moved past by two reasonable people in love.

Prosocial lie-telling behavior in children between 3 and 11 years of age was examined using an undesirable gift paradigm. In the first condition, children received an undesirable gift and were questioned by the gift-giver about whether they liked the gift. In the second condition, children were also given an undesirable gift but received parental encouragement to tell a white lie prior to being questioned by the gift-giver. In all conditions, the majority of children told a white lie and this tendency increased with age.

From very early on, children are socialized to be truthful in most social contexts. However, they are also taught implicitly or explicitly that they should not tell the blunt truth in other situations. In these situations, termed politeness settings, the truth may be trivial or even hurtful to its recipient Sweetser, Thus, studying white lie-telling will not only allow us to form a more comprehensive picture of the development of verbal deception, but also the developmental origin of this pervasive adult behavior.

The development of white lie-telling also has more general implications for understanding social development. It provides a window for us to understand the process by which children learn necessary social skills to interact with others and form social relations. Nearly one-fourth of young adults are looking for love through dating websites or apps. This relatively new form of courtship can give you access to a large pool of potential partners. It also presents a unique set of challenges. In a recent paper , my colleague Jeff Hancock and I wondered: How often do people who use dating apps lie? What sort of things are they prone to lie about? Our studies are some of the first to address these questions, but others have also examined deception in online dating.

Past research focused largely on the dating profile. Studies have found, for example, that men tend to overstate their height and lie about their occupation, while women understate their weight and tend to have less accurate photos than their counterparts. But profiles are only one aspect of the online dating process. Only after messaging your match will you decide if you want to meet him or her.

We found that lies could be categorized into two main types. The first kind were lies related to self-presentation. If participants wanted to present themselves as more attractive, for example, they would lie about how often they went to the gym.

All employees deserve to hear honest feedback from their managers, yet one factor appears to hinder access to helpful critique: gender. Underperforming female employees are more likely to receive kinder — albeit inaccurate — evaluations of their work than their male counterparts, one study suggests. Two experiments were designed to test the hypothesis. The first test asked participants to guess whether the recipient of the critique was male or female, based on how the poor performance was portrayed in the evaluation.

The second experiment gauged whether the participants themselves were more likely to write a kinder yet less accurate performance review of a female subject. The participants were instructed to rate two poorly written essays from two individuals whose genders were yet unknown to the participants. When asked to provide narrative feedback — after the gender of the writers was revealed — participants assigned to critique the work of the female writer showed a tendency to go gentle on the subject with more positive comments.

They also gave the female writer a grade higher than the one given during the initial evaluation.

The holiday of unknown origins comes just a few days after another holiday that celebrates trickery and lying – April Fool’s Day and a few weeks before Honesty Day , a made-up holiday that honors the virtue of honesty and truth-telling. While the name suggests that the holiday encourages people to tell lies all day long, we would like to think that the day is not an actual celebration of lying but an acknowledgment that lying is part of life, and sometimes people have to lie to make others feel better.

And of those who had lied, only 7 percent of their messages contained untruths. That means a full 93 percent of the messages were honest.
